Continued forays into domesticity

Been shoving furniture around.

My reading corner (without a bookshelf):

The shelf just didn't work there. It's too tall to go under the window and too long to go on the other wall, and too unstable to angle across. I might try to find a shelf to replace the round table, or I might not. Right now the round table is hiding one of my speakers.

The entertainment center wall:

I left it on the same wall it was on, mainly because I can't move it across the room by myself. Shoving it a few feet along the same wall is one thing, but to actually move it, I'd have to pick it up because it catches on the area rug. Need your thoughts-- do I need to conscript some help to move it across the room? Since the shelf I was looking at putting in that corner wouldn't work there, the only real case for moving it would be so that it isn't the first thing you see when you walk in the door.

The full effect:

It looks a lot better as is. As I said, I'm still open to the suggestion of switching the entertainment center and sofa, I just couldn't do that alone. Do you think I still ought to?

And, what about this space:

Obviously, I'm a clutterbug. I think that spot looks empty, which is why it currentl has a random dining room chair in it. What do you think I should put there?

a. something along the lines of a table
b. something along the lines of a bookshelf
c. something along the lines of a (fake) potted plant (fake because I can't keep anything real alive)
d. something along the lines of an art arrangement
e. absolutely nothing

And speaking of empty spaces, I also have this one:

That's to the left of the entertainment center. Should I fill that spot with:

a. something along the lines of a table
b. something along the lines of a bookshelf
c. something along the lines of a (fake) potted plant (fake because I can't keep anything real alive)
d. something along the lines of an art arrangement
e. absolutely nothing
f. None of the above, move the sofa to that wall-- the sofa is long enough that there won't be a space issue there.

And, in case anyone was wondering about the bookcase, it got reassigned to the dining room.

This actually works because:

1. I needed more light in there and now I have a lamp
2. I needed to pull some of the reds into that space and had never figured out how to do it, except with a red tablecloth which looks horrid.

I'm thinking I might replace the candles with a decanter set, which would make more sense in the dining room. What do you think?

And, if you see a spot where you think I ought to put the other vertical picture (complements the one between the window and the door), let me know.

Also, if you have any ideas about the top of the entertainment center, let me know.

And do you think it's worth the effort to paint in an apartment? I really hate the white walls. I've been flirting with some pale antique gold kind of thing for a while now...

Finally, what sort of window treatment (if any) do you think I ought to do on the balcony door?

Re: the space beside the door: if it were me, I'd either leave the space empty (it would make it easier if you're bringing in groceries or the like) or a table for my keys and purse.

The door is just to the balcony, so I'm never coming in with a handful from there. If that were the front door, I'd be putting a table there for my purse.

That's just what I was going to say.

Late, as usual. If you don't use that door much, I'd leave it empty - but I have lousy taste.

I just always twitch at empty spaces. I'm so not a minimalist.

Re: the balcony door-- I would say that whether or not you put any sort of window treatment on it would depend on whether or not you want to have light through it. As I look at the pics you have up now, I see the room as two distinct halves: the red/darker side (the side with the curtain, reading corner, and entertainment centre) and the light side (the side with more white walls showing and the light glowing through the white blinds on the door. To continue the unity of the room as a whole, I would incorporate some sort of window treatment. Whether or not it should be opaque depends on your preferences, of course.
Re: the "empty" spot by the balcony door-- Um, you have that second narrow picture, right? What about putting both of them on that narrow strip of wall? One with the bottom just above the light switch, and the other just below it? If the floor level still seems to scream empty to you, I would consider continuing the "plant" motif from the pictures and put an arrangement there. Of course, that begs the question of whether or not the kitty will wreak havoc with it.
Oh, the reading corner is darling! I love it. :) As for your idea of painting the walls antique gold--that would go with the lovely chair!
As far as the bare spot on the other side of the entertainment centre, you said as one of the poll choices that if you were to switch the couch with the centre, the couch would fill up the space, thus negating the empty space. Well, if you moved the couch to that side, what effect would that have on the reading corner? And would there end up being an empty space on the side of the centre if you moved it across the room? What would you do on the walls above the couch if you switched it and the centre? Also, do you have any opinions on whether or not you want your reading corner to be able to view the TV (looks like it can't in the current setup, but that may be how you want it!)?
Re: top of the entertainment centre-- I see that your pictures all have flowers/foliage in them. Have you considered a sort of autumn (based on the colour scheme) flora arrangement to drape across the top (and perhaps dangle over the ends)? The main problem with that type of thing is having to dust it. LOL
I love decorating. Too bad I've only ever decorated one room in our house to date. (When everything is second-hand and nothing matches, there's not much decorating to do. *sigh*) Can't wait to see your choices! :)

The light/dark thing is one of my concerns. I don't think that tab-top microseude curtains would be appropriate on a door, and I haven't figured out what to do in lieu of that. I could replace the white blinds with burgandy (I think I've seen those) but I don't know if I like that idea or not... or I could do a swag type of treatment over the door frame, or one of those sheer curtains gathered in the middle... I feel like it needs a window treatment. I just don't know what.

The empty spot by the door-- I'd thought about putting the two vertical pictures there, and if they weren't florals I would have already done it. Do you think having a topiary stacked on top of a topiary would look awkward? As for a plant there, I could always build something out of branches from my parents' pecan trees and attack spanish moss or something to it and maybe kitties would scratch on it instead of the ottoman... *wheels turning*

I love the idea of harvest florals and fruits on top of the entertainment center. I think I might just do that.

Gold and the chair... my real hesitation there is that the chair desperately needs re-covering. I should probably get that done before I paint, huh? Or, considering how long it usually takes me to get around to these things, maybe I ought to just go ahead and paint. If I weren't in an apartment and wouldn't have to return the walls to white eventually, I swear I'd paint one of the walls red (maybe the one the sofa is on). I love color. I think the gold would be easier to cover when I move out though. I keep toying with the idea of some sort of wall cover for one of the walls anyway.

As for moving the sofa... that actually has several drawbacks. For one, the sofa doesn't really match the chair. Not at all, actually. The sofa is sort of tan and burgandy stripes that blend into a kind of taupe color, and the chair is a buttery gold damask. And if I move the sofa to that wall, one end of it will practically be in the sight line of the door. But... I still don't like the entertainment center being the first thing you see when you walk in. I dont' even watch tv, and I hate giving up that much space to the stupid thing as it is. I really have some principle problems with it being the focal point of my damned living room.

I love decorating too. I always have grandiose ideas that have to be scaled down. I come up with elaborate themes then have to back off because they're impractical. And I *love* shopping at flea markets and close-out places. Those three huge pictures I have-- I got one for $15, one was $20 and one was about $40. I snagged the chair at a garage sale for $5. The sofa came from one coworker, the dining room table and chairs from another. The table cloth was from Ross for $3 or something stupid like that.

After I get the living room together, I'm going to start on the computer room and you can see the fouton slip-cover I made out of a tablecloth (Isaac Mizrahi, clearance from Target.)

hmmm... completely random: have you ever considered wallpaper? It can be hung on just one wall, or even just one section of a wall... Or, you could consider hanging tapestries or regular cloth on the walls, accented by the pictures. Re: the balcony door-- A sheer panel (in the same colour as the curtains or in a colour of something else you want to highlight) to cover the white blinds might work.
Alternatively, what about using torchiere lamps to cast coloured light onto the expanses of white wall? I'm throwing out weird ideas now, since they might somehow manage to spur you onto something brilliant. LOL ;)

My two cents: If they will let you paint - paint. It doesn't take that much effort or expense and it can make a world of difference.

It looks great! I love the reading corner :)

Maybe a plant would work in that space by the balcony door. If not, I'd probably just leave it empty. And a plant in the space by the entertainment centre.

As for the painting, how long are you planning to stay there? If you think you'll be there for a while yet it's probably worth it, but if you're thinking of moving in the near future then I wouldn't bother if I were you. Are you renting? Would the landlord pay for or contribute to the materials if you did some redecorating?

I love the reading corner. Are the drapes new? I was thinking a small console table in the spot by the door, but since it is a small space and the door is to the balcony, maybe a plant would be nice. There are many lovely pots at nurseries and I even found one that I have in my Living Room at Lowes.

As for the 2nd empty space... maybe there is enough furniture on that wall (with the entertainment center), so either another plant or just some art possibly.

Anyway, I really like what you have done so far. And btw, I like the sunny layout on your LJ too. :)

Actually, I got the drapes on clearance at Bed Bath and Beyond when I first moved in (two years ago or so) I have this love-hate relationship with them. They're microsuede. Enough said.

Thanks about the layout! I was just in a sunny kind of mood this morning :)
